What to Do
Visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve sits right off iconic Highway 1, about three miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Known for its dramatic natural beauty, the reserve is perfect for coastal hikes or leisurely walks while taking in the rugged cliffs, turquoise waters, and rare Monterey Cypress trees. Winter is an excellent time for whale-watching, while sea lions can be spotted year-round. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers, as coastal weather can change quickly.
Entrance fee: $10 per vehicle. Pets are not allowed.
Drive the 17-Mile Drive
One of the most scenic routes on the Monterey Peninsula, the famous 17-Mile Drive winds through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach. This stunning coastal drive showcases iconic landmarks such as The Lone Cypress, one of the most photographed trees in North America, and the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Entrance fee: $12 per vehicle. Before starting the drive, we stopped at a local restaurant to grab sandwiches and a burrata salad, then enjoyed a relaxed picnic at one of the tables near Pebble Beach.
Explore the Shops
Spend some time wandering through Carmel’s charming village streets, where fairytale cottages house unique boutiques, art galleries, wine-tasting rooms, and specialty shops. Downtown Carmel is best explored on foot, allowing you to fully enjoy its European-inspired charm.
Carmel Beach
End your day by watching the sunset at Carmel Beach. If you’re lucky, you may catch a bagpiper playing “Amazing Grace.”
Where to Eat & Drink
Best for Breakfast: Stationary - Outstanding specialty coffee and must-try dishes like the chilaquiles and their incredible cinnamon roll.
Best for Lunch: Brophy’s Tavern – Voted best fish and chips three years in a row, and the burrata salad with prosciutto was unreal.
Best Sandwiches: Breadsong - The Thanksgiving sandwich was unbelievably good.
Best for Dinner: La Bicyclette - Arguably the best restaurant in Carmel. We’re serious gnocchi snobs, and this was hands-down the best we’ve ever had. Reservations are highly recommended and should be booked in advance by phone.
Best Service: Nora’s - A fantastic chicken pot pie, but what truly stood out was the exceptional service and warm, inviting ambiance.
Best Cocktails: Bud’s at La Playa - A stylish, historic hotel bar known for its expertly crafted cocktails. Every drink is impressive, but the Sinclair Oil is especially bold, so sip with caution.
